2° New Scala album!
Dear Scala fan, we have been recording the first songs of our new album. As
announced it will be a ‘Scala revisited’ album, with the marvelous voices of the
Scala girls accompanied only by a concert grand piano.
And this album might surprise many. The album will feature Scala’s peculiar
arrangements of world pop & rock hits. Expect surprising versions of Solsbury
Hill (Peter Gabriel), Nothing Else Matters (Metallica), Lithium (Nirvana), Bad
(U2), Champagne Supernova (Oasis), I Feel You (Depeche Mode), Ironic (Alanis
Morissette), Use Somebody (Kings of Leon) just to name a few. This new album
will be released in September 2010. Of course we shall keep you informed.
3° First exclusive concerts
Whether the new album is ready or not, Scala will give a first exclusive
acoustic concert the playlist of which will include all the new songs i.e. the
full album. This performance is planned on Friday 20th August 2010 at the
‘Kulturkirche’ in Neuruppin (Germany).
Tickets for this exclusive concert are available via Scala’s web site only. For
more info, click HERE.
We really look forward to meeting you again, in Neuruppin or in the other cities
where Scala will perform. See you soon!

New Album, New Songs & More Concerts
24.11.2009
Dear fans of Scala & Kolacny Brothers,
it's been a long time since you have heard from us, but as you will see Scala
did not rest on its laurels. So, there are many activities and projects we want
to inform you about.
1.Scala is preparing a new
album. The first recording sessions are planned on 5th and 6th December. The
title of the album, the exact date of release and many linked projects are not
known yet, but you may expect the release about mid 2010. One thing is for sure: Scala's roots will be revisited, with arrangements and covers of well-known rock
& pop songs of international bands, sung by magnificent voices and accompanied
only by Steven's piano. Stay tuned!
2.As from December, several
new songs will be on our concert playlist, e.g. in Berlin (at the Kesselhaus on
11th and 12th December) and in Belgium, in Antwerp (at the Koningin Elisabeth-zaal,
on 5th March 2010). These new songs will be evaluated in terms of audience
appreciation.
3.We are very pleased to
announce that Scala will give more concerts abroad in 2010. Scala will perform
several times in Germany (as usual). Touring in Canada, performing in France
again, our début in Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, all of these projects
are practically finalized. So stay up-to-date via Scala's
Concerts
web page where you will also be able to buy tickets.
4.Each year, we offer a
special Christmas opportunity to our fans. This year you are given the
opprtunity to buy one of the 80 very last DeLuxe Paper Plane albums left in our
stocks. Each of them will be autographed by the Kolacny Brothers, Steven and
Stijn. The albums will be available via the
Scalashop. Don't miss this opportunity for this
DeLuxe edition will no longer be available.
5.Our second exclusive
present is a new song of Scala, fully free downloadable (just like our Paper
Plane songs!). Within the framework of a benefit event for the Flemish Refugee
Action, Scala has made a special arrangement of a song called België (Belgium).
Three refugee girls, Petimat, Daniella and Vesara, sang with Scala and so made
their dream come true. The three of them fled their country and are working hard
to achieve a safe future in Belgium. Support the Flemish Refugee Action and
download the song for free on
www.vluchtelingenwerk.be.
You will be able to see Petimat, Daniella and Vesara perform with Scala on 8th
December at the NTG in Ghent (Belgium), at a benefit evening for the Flemish
Refugee Action, where artist performances will alternate with interviews.
Tickets are available on
www.vluchtelingenwerk.be/benefiet.
As a matter of fact, we mainly hope you will remain faithful fans of Scala!
We really look forward to meeting you at one of Scala's coming concerts.
Kind regards,
Steven and Stijn Kolacny

‘La Grande Sophie’ invites Scala to perform with her
at the Olympia in Paris on 17th November 2009
15.10.2009
La Grande Sophie, a very successful
French singer songwriter, has been a great fan of Scala
& Kolacny Brothers for several years. For her
performance at the Olympia (the oldest concert hall in
Paris - 1888) on 17th November, together with Steven
Kolacny she will arrange some of her songs that she will
sing with the Scala girls.
To Scala this project means a magnificent musical
come-back in France’s capital city, on one of the most
prestigious stages in the world.

The Wall of Sound / Scala in Montreal (Canada): an
overwhelming live experience!
31.08.2009
Dear fans of Scala,
On the 21st and 22nd July Scala was very pleased and
honoured to perform as guest of honour at the Montreal
‘Juste pour Rire’ city festival in Canada.
The show was named the Wall of Sound. This multimedia
show could not have been named more appropriately. See
for yourself:
http://www.vimeo.com/6073376.
The ‘Wall of Sound - Scala’ production was also awarded
the "Prix Coup de coeur du grand public La Presse 2009",
a kind of public’s favourite prize of the festival. This
prize is particularly important since it is awarded by
all he people attending the festival to one production
among all the performances.
This award acknowledges the outstanding work of the 300
artists and engineers involved in this show.
Montréal was seduced by the show as a whole and by
Scala’s voices. Here are some quotes from articles
published in the Québec press the day after the concert.
- ... ”Thanks to its talent and communicative energy,
wherever the choir performs, in Brussels, in Berlin or
in New York, each show proves a moment of pure magic
where spectators and chorists sing their love for music
in unison.” (Source:
www.infoculture.ca)
- “In three dimensions and five floors high, Scala
proved to be much more than nice female voices singing
rock songs. In 3D Scala means goose bumps, tears,
amazement, umbrellas, rain-stained scores and wet hair.”
“If we had such choirs in our churches, I ‘d go to Mass
every Sunday morning!”
(Source: Soundbeat Magazine)
Keep enjoying Scala’s music !

JUST TO SING
PROJECT SCALA: THE WALL OF SOUND
Tuesday, July 21 and Wednesday, July 22
at dusk – Place des festivals
On the evenings of July 21 and July 22, the stars in the
sky over Montreal will hold their breath when the young
singers of the Belgian choir Scala begin to sing.
Founded in 1996 by Steven and Stijn Kolacny, Scala has
conquered Europe and the world with its crystalclear
voices, communicative energy and original choral
settings of music by U2, Radiohead, Nirvana, Indochine,
Alanis Morissette and other popular and rock classics in
the same vein. From Brussels to Berlin, from New York to
Budapest to Hamamatsu in Japan, Scala’s every
performance is a moment of pure magic when the
choristers and audience in unison share their love of
music.
For the choir’s premiere appearance in
Montreal, Just For Laughs has decided to do
things in grand style ... and very grand style indeed,
with the additional participation of 250 choral singers
from Quebec who will join their voices with the young
singers from Flanders. Plus some very grand effects from
the genius of designer and art director Olivier Dufour,
who will turn this unique concert into an unforgettable
pyro-musical multimedia show. So come on down, enjoy a
new choral take on your pop and rock classics, warm up
your voice, share your musical memories and talent ...
and bring on the night.

WILLEM JONGENEELEN
In the
Netherlands they are still a phenomenon, in Belgium a
world act for years now. I am referring to the Scala &
Kolacny Brothers choir from Aarschot, a small provincial
town in Flanders, east of Louvain in Belgium.
Steven and Stijn Kolacny, respectivally the pianist and
the choir leader, and both classically trained
musicians, have managed to have their choir scoring
several hits on radio stations thanks to their excellent
arrangements of songs of Nirvana, Radiohead, Lamb and
Rammstein. ‘Paper Plane’ is Scala’s eighth album but the
first one exclusively with their very own songs. This
slightly affects the choir’s recognizable sound but the
atmosphere and the class have remained. Those who refuse
to accept that a girl choir can sing pop songs would
better stop reading here. Indeed, it requires some
openness of mind to appreciate the beautifully written
and produced songs combining a slight classical touch
with a psychedelic or modern electronic make-over. Koen
Buyse, the frontman of Zornik, himself got involved in
this production. Something curious? Well, the atmosphere
rather reminds me of Pink Floyd and The Polyphonic Spree
and not at all of an old-fashioned choir in a parish
church or dusty community centre. This is a top pop
record! Would Lowlands dare to put Scala & Kolacny
Brothers on their billboard?
(*) Lowlands is a huge festival organized each year
near Amsterdam.

Immediately after the Paper

Scala & Kolacny Brothers featuring Pim Smit, launches
Seashell, a new single and video clip
07.10.2008
Scala choir girls go naked for
Pim Smit’s bodypaint project
Dear fans of Scala,
A few weeks ago the Scala choir girls were
colour-sprayed by Pim Smit, a Dutch painter from
Amsterdam who lives in Tirlemont (Belgium).
Footage of this huge bodypaint project was used to make
the video clip (produced by Jan Vrints, directed by
Senol Korkmaz) for Seashell, a new single from Scala’s
brand new album Paper Plane. After the collective
bodypaint session, a few Scala girls, who refused to be
replaced by professional actresses or stand-ins, went
naked and were painted from top to toe by artist Pim
Smit.
As a fan of Scala, you will be among the
first to be able to watch this clip on
www.scalachoir.com. TV reports
about the bodypainting project and the making of the
clip can be watched on
www.pimsmit.com.
Our newest album Paper Plane is on sale now in most of
the record shops in Flanders, and is still downloadable
free through Scala’s website. Scala fans keep
downloading it but also buy it. Our thanks to you all,

ARTIST PIM SMIT AND SCALA GIRL CHOIR LAUNCH BIG BODY
PAINT PROJECT
03.06.2008
Artist Pim Smit and the
Kolacny Brothers are going to work out a very peculiar
project that will climax on 6th September in Tirlemont
in Belgium.
The full Scala choir will
lie down on the floor of Pim’s studio to become part of
the world’s biggest bodypaint project ever.
In 1 session at least 150
Scala girls are going to be bodypainted into one big
living artwork.
This project has been registered with the Guiness Book
of Records. This event will of course be attended by an
official delegation of Guinness Book of Records Ltd.
‘Paper Plane’, Scala’s new album, will be released on
1st October 2008
06.05.2008
Dear fans of Scala,
Nothing is what it seems to be. Indeed, Scala has traded
the seeming quietness for the recording studios where it
is working at its new album ‘Paper Plane’.
‘Paper Plane’ stands for the light, pure and
diaphanous angel voices soaring above Scala’s audience
like a paper plane. The lead track itself expresses
unconditional faith in life and love.
Scala is evolving ... All the songs for Paper Plane
have been written by Steven Kolacny. So the album will
feature Scala’s own songs only and no longer covers.
Taking this seemingly obvious step was not easy since
Scala is known for its arrangements and covers of
international rock and pop hits. ‘Paper Plane’ provides a new dimension to the
Scala concept and allows the choir to make a long step
forward.
As a matter of fact we hope you will welcome this
evolution and go on supporting Scala as you dif before.
‘Paper Plane’ will be released on 1st October
2008. More information will be provided in the following
weeks, including the dates of all the Scala concerts.

Compliments of Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
16.12.2007
Dear fans of Scala,
namedropping very seldom happens on our own web site,
but since the compliment below comes from the Best Band
On Earth, we could not but share this information with
you all.
Interview in HUMO - 3510/50 (11.12.07): Jonny
Greenwood's (Radiohead) reply when asked what he
thinks of Scala's version of "Everything In Its Right
Place" (It All Leads To This album):
"I do have a CD of Scala at home, but I've never
heard this cover before. Very tasteful, orginally
performed, it's even moving. Congratulations to the
Scala girls!"

New culminating point for Scala in Germany
05.12.2007
Scala
invited by José Carreras !
José
Carreras
(one of the three world-famous tenors with Pavarotti and
Placido Domingo) has been seduced by Scala, the Flemish
girl choir of the Kolacny brothers.
Carreras has his own show on the German ARD TV chain,
viz. the „José
Carreras Gala“.
Scala will perform live on 13th December (broadcast from
Leipzig). José Carreras has asked Scala to sing one the
songs from their latest album (produced by EMI Germany)
“One-Winged Angel” but this time with the 80 musicians
of a symphony orchestra. Besides, on request of
Carreras’ management, the Scala choir girls will sing
another song together with the tenor himself.
The José
Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation
In 1987, the
Spanish tenor José Carreras was told to have leukaemia.
Thanks to medical progress he recovered from this
disease. The support of family and friends helped him
through this difficult time. Carreras felt there was a
debt to be paid and he created the José
Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation,
the head office of which is in Barcelona (Spain). Later
on, two more foundations were created in the USA and
Switzerland. In 1995, Carreras founded the German José
Carreras Leukamie-Stiftung e.V. with head office in
Munich. The Foundations all have a social purpose which
Carreras states as follows: “Leukaemia must be curable,
always and with everyone.”
Gala
MDR will
broadcast this benefit concert live from the Messehalle
1 in Leipzig on the German ARD tv channel. Besides top
guest José Carreras, Axel Bulthaupt, a well-known German
presentator, will lead the public through the show.
Public and artists may expect a varied programme with
patients’ emotional testimonies, world stars and
distinguished guests. Katie Melua
and Herbert
Grönemeyer
have already confirmed that they will perform.
On Thursday 20th September, Scala & Kolacny
Brothers will perform on the occasion of the the maypole
erection at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, in
front of an audience of German ministers. This event is
taking place one year after the first stone laying of
this huge complex which will be one of the most modern
and multifunctional arenas in Europe.
On the same day, in the evening, Scala will perform at
the Kulturbrauerei on the occasion of Popkomm,
with Midem, the biggest trade show of the music industry
in Europe. On Saturday 22nd September, the choir girls
have been invited to perform at Radio Eins’ 10th
birthday show at the Admiralpalast in Berlin.
By the end of September, the German singer Nena
will release her new album featuring Ein Lied
(originally sung by Rammstein), a cover which she
recorded with the Scala girls.

0110 concerts in Antwerp
04.10.2006
The Scala girls and the Kolacny brothers
performed at the 0110 concerts in Antwerp, not against
something or someone but FOR someone. They dedicated
their miniconcert to Luna and her au-pair friend, two
girls whose life was abruptly stopped by an ideology of
some kind, who will never be able to enjoy anymore the
opportunities of life which the Scala girls will have.
After the concert, Steven Kolacny talked with Luna's
grandmother and aunt. These 0110 concerts were more than
a noble and meaningful initiative.
Adjustment
12.09.2006
We have noticed that our very favourite
percussionist David Demeyere has not been mentioned in
the credits in the booklet of our new CD.
This certainly will be corrected in
future editions and we are apologizing to David who is
the man behind the warm bass in 'Gorecki' and 'Station
Approach'.
